Investigating the exposure and impact of chemical UV filters on coral reef ecosystems: Review and research gap prioritization

Coral reefs are among the world's most productive and biologically diverse ecosystems. In recent decades, they have experienced an unparalleled decline resulting from various anthropogenically induced stressors. Ultraviolet (UV) filters found in personal care products, such as sunscreen, chemical pollutants that emerging a growing toxic threat to reef organisms. this study, systematic literature review was conducted (1) determine current understanding of spatial distribution occurrence UV exposed marine environment, (2) synthesize ecotoxicological thresholds relevant organisms under UV-filter exposures, (3) identify research gaps related both exposure toxicity coral With identified, survey developed distributed experts field representing academic, governmental, not-for-profit, industry researchers order prioritize inform future efforts. The identified need for better impacts co-stressors, long-term exposure, mixture, degradation product realistic environmental conditions.
